Much of the fervid discussion around Luster has focused on Leilani’s astute and witty analysis of sexual politics and racial power structures in the 21st-century US. The confrontation is rife with fear and tension, and when it’s over (diffused when Akila’s white mother intervenes), the first thing Edie and Akila do is go inside, sit down and play a video game. Although Edie is compliant, Akila – younger and much less worldly – challenges the cops and gets thrust to the ground and restrained. The woman, Edie, is heading back to her lover’s house with his adopted black daughter, Akila, when the pair are stopped and questioned by two police officers. T here is an extraordinary and telling moment in Raven Leilani’s acclaimed novel Luster, about a young black woman who has an affair with a middle-aged white man and ends up living with his family. ![]()

![]() ![]() Not only do the animals in Raptor Red not talk, but Bakker actually uses science to portray the dinosaur’s perspective to you. Raptor Red does this incredibly well though. Talking animals ups the challenge when writing a serious book aimed at adults. When I first heard about this book, I was curious how you could write a piece of dinosaur fiction. There will be no spoilers in this review, so feel free to read on with reckless abandon! The dinosaurs in this book are certainly portrayed that way. He was the first paleontologist to suggest dinosaurs may have been active, warm blooded animals, way back in the 1960s. Robert “Bob” Bakker is the author and aforementioned paleontologist. Actual Velociraptors were only about 3 feet tall, but Utahraptors were man-sized and larger. Utahraptor’s are essentially the Velociraptors you see in Jurassic Park. I think "Not Otherwise Specified" handles eating disorders in a realistic yet positive, healthy & way I would highly highly recommend it for this reason. It's great that a lot of ED books are able to capture the rawness of what it's like to suffer from these illnesses, but it can be very harmful by putting you back in this mindset. ![]() I also think it's great because it did not feel as triggering (to me) as many other books about eating disorders, even ones that involve recovery. Virtually any scene that involved Etta's feelings about her body or her ED really spoke to me. Not only does it show an eating disorder that isn't always recognized in fiction (Otherwise Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder), but it was a very realistic portrayal of some of the experiences one might have in recovery.
